Kitchen Sponge Cloths - 5 pack
These kitchen sponge cloths by If You Care are 100% compostable, machine or dish-washable and reusable as well as being compostable at the end of their useful lives (up to 300 washes). They are durable and incredibly absorbent, absorbing 20 times their own weight in water for a variety of kitchen tasks. Don’t worry, that “plastic” packaging is plant-based and also certified for industrial composting. We love them.
One of our favourite swaps, these kitchen cloths are machine washable up to 88 degrees centigrade for hygienic reuse. When it does eventually wear out, after approx. 300 washes, it has been certified compostable for home and industrial composting facilities for disposal. Each pack contains five cloths, and after 9 months of heavy use across various household tasks, we are still far from needing to replace them.
Ingredients: These If You Care cloths are made with a three dimensional combination of cellulose, unbleached cotton and mirabilite, which is a natural mineral salt. In the course of the patented process to make these innovative sponge cloths, the mineral is washed out, which leaved a porous structure that allows it to absorb up to 20 times their own weight in water. The blend that is left is 70% cellulose and 30% cotton and contains no petroleum products, plastic or animals products and are 100% renewable.
Packaging: Don’t worry, this isn’t one of those products that looks brilliant and turns up in petrochemical plastic that is destined for landfill. The packet is a corn-starch biopolymer and is certified for industrial composting.
This cloth can be used with water, soap or household cleaners except bleach or chlorine products. After use, give it a thorough rinse, wring out the excess water to improve absorbency and leave it flat to dry. Wash at up to 88 degrees centigrade or 190 degrees Fahrenheit in a dishwasher or washing machine and reuse.
Keeping the kitchen clean at home is obviously very important, particularly since a little person invaded our house and so this product was always going to see some use. We wanted a product that replaced the plastic sponges and dishcloths, but we weren’t prepared to sacrifice quality.
Kitchen cloths are normally plastic-based, which cannot be recycled and end up in landfill or natural fibres that lack the absorbency and usability of the man-made cloths. Luckily the If You Care product combines the cleaning and absorbency of a plastic-based fibre cloth, with excellent environmental credentials and a totally thought out approach to sustainability.
We have tested this product in our own home for most of 2018 and we totally converted. We really feel it is better in many ways than the impossible to recycle or compost cloths or sponges we had before.
