NON PLASTIC BEACH SALES UP 81% DESPITE COVID-19 CHALLENGES

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NON PLASTIC BEACH SALES UP 81% DESPITE COVID-19 CHALLENGES

3rd December, 2020

South-Oxfordshire’s Non Plastic Beach has posted a second record month in a row, with sales up 81% over November 2019 and 13% over October 2020, itself a record month by a significant margin. The Woodcote-based online retailer and wholesaler, which sells alternatives to plastic direct to the public and to retailers across the world, only celebrated its second birthday in October this year.

The record came despite a challenging month in which the founding partners had to isolate away from the office and warehouse after their 3-year old daughter, Isla was potentially exposed to COVID-19. This meant that as well as entertaining an active and inquisitive child, they were juggling customer queries, trade orders, marketing, finance and stock reordering remotely.

The company had started 2020 focusing on selling to shops, tourist attractions etc. and attended Spring Fair, the largest buyers retail exhibition in Europe to help connect with these people. The attendance at the  show, which was part funded by OxLEP brought the company a lot of new customers and prospects, but then COVID-19 lockdown came and these new customers all had to close down.

This meant a pivot for Non Plastic Beach as co-founder Gareth explains: “In March 2020 our business to business sales fell off a cliff, which was a big blow after a record February for trade transactions. We were really pleased to see trade customers coming back as they planned for reopening and some of the companies we met with at Spring Fair ordering for the first time or making plans for 2021.”

Gareth continues, the record November came off the back of an October which had shattered the previous sales record:: “In October we had mentions and recommendations on Instagram and Twitter by TV presenters Eamonn Holmes and Julia Bradbury, which helped increase our sales to 35% above than any previous month, so to beat that again in November was quite something. We had to adapt and push our direct to consumer sales from the website much harder. It is pleasing to see this strategy working, but it was a challenge to cope with the new volumes and we are really grateful to our team and particularly our Operations Manager Louise Taylor who was instrumental in the success.”

Non Plastic Beach was founded in October 2018 by husband and wife team, Gareth and Nicola Dean with sales to over 90 countries, plus working with brands including outdoor and ski giant, Salomon Sports and Etihad Airways for the world’s first plastic free flight. Alongside selling alternatives to kitchen and bathroom plastics like solid shampoo, washing up bars, toothpaste tablets and silk dental floss direct to the public via www.nonplasticbeach.com; the Woodcote-based company sells via a wide variety of shops and retailers from owner manager zero waste stores, to Urban Outfitters and surf shops in Portugal to the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
